What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a holistic system of treatment, which was developed 200 years ago in Germany by physician Samuel Hanemaan.. It is based on the principle of treating “like with like”. In other words, a substance that causes symptoms when taken in large doses, can be used in small amounts to treat those same symptoms.

For example, drinking too much coffee can cause sleeplessness and agitation, so according to this principle, coffee when made into a homeopathic medicine, could be used to treat people with these symptoms.

Homeopathy is based on the philosophy that the body, mind, and emotions are not really separate and distinct, but are actually fully integrated. Based on this perspective, homeopaths select a remedy that fits all of a patient’s physical and psychological symptoms.

Benefits of Homeopathy

The approach in homeopathy is such that it addresses not just the physical symptoms but also the underlying emotional feelings that contribute to creating the physical symptoms

Prolonged emotional stress can cause physical problems, like upset stomach, difficulty in digesting foods, poor nutrient assimilation, weaker immune system, sleeplessness, etc. The opposite is also true. Illness and physical problems can result in anxiety or emotional uneasiness. Therefore, it is important for a homeopath to conduct an in-depth interview of a patient to ensure a proper, all-encompassing remedy.

Treatments are “individualized” or tailored to each person—it’s common for different people with the same condition to receive different treatments. Homeopathy uses a different diagnostic system for assigning treatments to individuals and recognizes clinical patterns of signs and symptoms that are different from those of conventional medicine.
Homeopathic remedies were developed over a period of 200 years by various homeopathic practitioners worldwide. Unlike Allopathic medicines, Homeopathic medicines do not undergo the process of large-scale laboratory and clinical trials to verify their effects and side effects. Since its development, there have been very few reports of adverse effects from homeopathic remedies. In fact, most remedies are gentle enough that they have been approved for over-the-counter use in many countries. When used correctly, homeopathy can be an effective treatment for a wide range of illnesses.

Homeopathy is widely considered safe because of the special preparation process for homeopathic remedies. This involves repeated steps of dilution and succussion of shaking at each dilution. Common potencies that are used are 30C, which has been diluted 1:100 thirty times, and 200C, which has been diluted 1:100 two hundred times. After the 12th dilution, there is no discernible chemical trace of the original substance left in the medicine, but homeopaths believe the preparation retains the qualities of the original substance.
